The memo arrives on a Tuesday. Five days in office, effective in ninety days, no exceptions, signed by the CEO with a paragraph about "collaboration" and "culture." By Wednesday morning, the Slack channels are already mapping the real story: which teams will be hit hardest, which working parents will quietly disappear, which senior engineers were already updating LinkedIn. Everybody knows what this is. Everybody has stopped pretending otherwise.

That's the shift. The mask didn't slip — it was removed deliberately, and 2026 is the year workers stopped flinching at what they saw underneath. According to BambooHR research circulating again this week, 25% of executives and 18% of HR leaders openly admit they hoped return-to-office mandates would push employees to quit. Seventy percent of workers now identify the tactic by name: quiet firing. The smoking gun is no longer hidden. It's on the conference room table, and somebody just slid it toward the middle.
