DBI Today: 50.9 (+1.8)

Oil markets were the story on Monday. Renewed fighting risk around the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow waterway that carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil — sent crude jumping more than 3%, and that fear rippled straight through to Wall Street and Europe, where stocks slipped and the return investors demand to lend the US government money for 30 years hit its highest level since 2007. Yet today's Daily Business Index, our single 0–100 score for how the global business world is faring, actually rose to 50.9, up 1.8 points. The gain came despite the oil scare, not because of it — a surprisingly strong US factory reading and a well-received China stimulus signal did more than enough to outweigh the geopolitical nerves.
