DBI Today: 51.2 (−1.3)

America's jobs engine spluttered in June, and it was the biggest story shaping the business world this week. The world's largest economy added just 57,000 jobs last month — less than half the roughly 115,000 economists had pencilled in — and the two previous months were revised down by a combined 74,000 on top of that. Today's Daily Business Index, our daily 0–100 gauge of global business health where 50 marks neutral conditions, reads 51.2, down 1.3 points. It's a small step back, driven less by panic and more by a labour market finally showing some cracks after a red-hot spring, while manufacturing factories from Frankfurt to Shanghai kept humming and oil kept getting cheaper.
