DBI Today: 54.5 (+2.3)

Donald Trump was minutes from ordering a fresh strike on Iran — then changed course, calling off the attack and opening the door to new talks instead. Oil prices, which had spent July climbing on fears of a wider Middle East war, dropped more than 5% in a single day, and stock markets from Wall Street to Mumbai took off in relief. Today's Daily Business Index, our daily 0–100 reading of global business health where 50 is neutral, rose to 54.5 from 52.2. It's a bigger jump than usual, but a de-escalating war and a red-hot US manufacturing report are more than enough to explain it — even as China's factories and shops keep sliding the other way.
