DBI Today: 51.7 (+0.5)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the 130-year-old index that tracks 30 of America's biggest companies, closed at a fresh record high as markets reopened after the July 4th break — but the applause was muted. Today's Daily Business Index, our daily 0–100 gauge of global business health where 50 marks neutral, reads 51.7, up half a point. It's a quiet number for a day that wasn't quiet at all: a services sector still expanding, oil still cheap thanks to easing Middle East tensions, and a very expensive question hanging over the artificial intelligence boom that's powered this market for two years. Nobody blinked. But a few people glanced sideways.
