DBI Today: 52.2 (−1.9)

Global markets couldn't agree on a mood Thursday. Wall Street's three big stock indexes slipped as investors picked through a heavy week of company earnings, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index — the city's main stock market gauge — dropped 1.5% on a wave of tech-stock selling, and yet Europe's Stoxx 600, a index tracking 600 of the continent's largest companies, closed at a fresh record high. Today's Daily Business Index, our daily 0–100 reading of global business health where 50 marks neutral, came in at 52.2, down from 55.8. The pullback wasn't really about panic. It was a reminder that the world's biggest economies are pulling in slightly different directions right now — and that America's stubbornly strong job market is still the steadiest hand in the room.
