DBI Today: 54.0 (+2.3)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average — the 130-year-old index tracking 30 of America's largest companies — briefly broke through 53,000 for the first time in its history, and closed at a fresh record. Today's Daily Business Index, our daily 0–100 gauge of global business health where 50 marks neutral, reads 54.0, up 2.3 points on yesterday. That's a bigger jump than usual, and it's because the rally wasn't confined to one market: Asia rose overnight, Europe followed, and the US pushed further still. Cheaper oil and a genuinely encouraging jobs signal added to the mood. But underneath the fanfare, Microsoft quietly cut thousands of jobs — a reminder that not every part of the economy is celebrating.
